Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice
What does the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Do?
We offer free specialist care to those facing the end of their life and to those who love and care for them. We\'ve been doing this for twenty-five years.
Many people think that a Hospice is simply a place to die. While the Hospice cannot offer a physical cure, it can be a place of healing. A large part of our work is about helping people make the most of the time they have left (which can be years) physically, emotionally and practically. Last year, 37% of our patients went home. In-patient care, with 20 beds, is provided alongside outpatient services, home support and day care. Pain relief and symptom control is offered as well as complementary therapies such as massage and reflexology, counselling, entertainment, occupational therapies, physiotherapy and spiritual care. Where possible individual\'s personal needs are catered for. Families are able to stay day and night, favourite tipples are offered from the daily drinks trolley and we have even been known to do baptisms, weddings and pet visits including a horse!
In addition we help the carers offering emotional and practical support and respite to help them cope. A bereavement service also cares for families and friends left behind.
Who does it care for?
Although based in Farnham our patients come from all over West Surrey and North Hampshire including in and around Guildford, Godalming, Cranleigh, Milford, Haslemere, Bordon, Aldershot, Fleet, Sandhurst, Farnborough, Frimley and Camberley. 96% of our patients have cancer but we also care for people with Motor Neurone Disease and HIV. Last year the occupancy rate of our in-patient beds was 89.7%, the day centre had more than 2.500 attendances and 1059 home visits were made.
Why is supporting the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice so important?
It costs £3.5 million a year just to run the Hospice - that\'s £7 a minute! We receive less that 16% of this from the NHS and therefore rely on the generosity of people like you and the rest of our community to make up the difference. Hopefully you and your family won\'t need us but we need to fundraise to make sure we are here for those that do.
Some surprising statistics
One in three of us get cancer
One in four die from it
60% of people who die from cancer encounter some form of hospice care
We are the most tangible local provider of cancer services to this community and we need your support to continue our work.
