Ipswich-Beira Health Initiative

Working to improve health in Mozambique

This charity was formed to support the development of a new medical school and its associated hospital in Beira, Mozambique.

Unlike many African countries, Mozambique is both peaceful and democratic but poor due to its limited resources. The health problems are horrendous with AIDS, gastroenteritis/cholera, tuberculosis, measles, malaria and trauma contributing to the very high rates of infant, child, maternal and adult mortality. There are only 800 doctors for a population of 17 million people. No more than 500 are Mozambican. Doctor /patient ratios in the central and northern provinces range from 1:50,000 – 1:157000.

In 2000 the feasibility of providing a second medical school in the country in Beira, was explored. Despite considerable obstacles of limited finance, personnel and expertise the first students were enrolled later that year. Their progress and the development of the faculty have been remarkable. The first cohort is now entering the Beira Hospital for their last two years of training. There is every prospect of the number of well-trained Mozambican doctors graduating per annum doubling or trebling per year from 2007 onwards. However the programme is still somewhat precarious.

The charity is helping to fill gaps in the student problem based curriculum, to develop a post graduate training programme for the very hard pressed doctors and nurses in the Central Hospital to enable them to  improve standards of emergency care, and  providing funding to improve the much needed renovation of the fabric of the hospital and water supply to clinical areas in particular.
