Get Connected
The vision of Get Connected is simple: that every young person in the UK can find the help they need to support their emotional and physical well being.
There is a great deal of help available for young people throughout the UK - there are over 1,000 telephone helplines alone - but knowing where to turn in a crisis is not necessarily obvious. How does a young person know where to get the help they need, or even what help is available?
Get Connected provides a free, UK wide email and telephone helpline that finds young people the best help whatever the problem. The helpline is a gateway service that gives young people access to the range of organisations that exist to help. The emphasis is on providing support and information to empower the caller, so that they can make an informed decision about which service to select.
Users of the telephone helpline can then be connected for free to their preferred service via a three-way conversation so the Get Connected helpline worker can assist the young person in explaining their situation. If the young person prefers face to face help details of drop-in services or day centres can be given. Service users contacting the helpline who have a mobile phone can also have relevant details forwarded to them via SMS (text message).
Young people who email Get Connected can be given links to other online services and resources or emailed details of relevant organisations. The email service ensures that Get Connected is accessible to as many young people as possible, for instance young people that are deaf or hard of hearing, or are simply too shy to talk about their problems over the phone.
Get Connected is a totally confidential service; telephone numbers and email addresses of service users are not stored and calls are never recorded. Get Connected works closely with referral agencies and priority phone lines have been established with ChildLine and The Samaritans.
The service is available between 1pm and 11pm every day of the year and emails are answered within 24 hours. It is free from all mobile phones or landlines and calls will never show up on the user\'s phone bill.
