The Down?s Syndrome Association (DSA) is the only organisation in the UK solely dedicated to living successfully with Down?s syndrome (DS) with an aim of helping people with DS live full and rewarding lives. Since 1970, the DSA has grown from being a local parent support group to a national charity with over 20,000 members, a national office in Teddington Middlesex, offices in Northern Ireland and Wales and a regional development team. Despite this, the organisation is run by a total staff of only 38 (many of them part time), and a network of approximately 106 regional volunteer-led support groups. The DSA?s efforts rely solely on the support of voluntary contributions through individuals, trusts and corporations.
There are 60,000 people in the UK with DS and an additional two babies are born with DS every day. The DSA for more than 30 years has been developing services for people with Down?s syndrome, their parents, families and carers. There have been a lot of improvements for people with DS in recent years. Children with DS receive an education, often in mainstream schools, and adults enjoy fulfilled, semi-independent lives with an increased life expectancy between 50 ? 60 years. Our association provides lifelong support for people with DS from pre-natal care, to education and entrance into the workforce through to retirement and elderly assistance.
In all of its activities, the DSA strives to champion the rights of people with DS, campaigning against discrimination and maintaining our commitment to improving awareness, knowledge and understanding of the condition.
