DanceEast

The National Dance Agency for the East of England

DanceEast, based in Ipswich, acts as a catalyst in providing an identifiable, creative and broad dance ecology for the East of England. Founded in 1983, the beginnings of DanceEast are strongly rooted in pioneering community outreach and education work in Suffolk. In 1993/94, DanceEast gained National Dance Agency status from Arts Council England, and today is one of a network of 9 National Dance Agencies strategically set up throughout England to support artistic practice and access to dance through a range of initiatives.

Building new audiences and advocates for dance, developing the art form and supporting dance artists is fundamental to the work of DanceEast. Under the Direction of Assis Carreiro, since January 2000, DanceEast has undertaken a dynamic period of growth and change.

For 2004, artists in residence included Protein Dance, Sara Crow & Co and Juliet Aster and in previous years Henri Oguike and Wayne McGregor. In 2001, DanceEast launched a Village Hall Touring programme and a fifth annual tour is planned with Bare Bones for March 2005 that will visit 17 rural communities. In 2001 DanceEast presented First Class Air Male, an evening of men dancing and in 2003, 2x2, an evening of duets, was launched.

A pyramid of activities and opportunities ensures that DanceEast plays a key role in bringing the highest quality dance to the East of England.

DanceEast\'s work in education and community outreach involves people of all ages and abilities and takes dance to urban and rural communities. In 2003, over 26,000 people took part in DanceEast activities including a training programme of classes; workshops and courses; youth dance groups; work with people with learning and physical disabilities and the elderly.

Current projects include a £6.5 million capital project to develop a DanceHouse on the Ipswich waterfront at Cranfields Mill, the largest urban regeneration programme in the East of England. This will enable DanceEast to operate, for the first time, in state-of-the-art facilities specially designed for dance and to offer a pyramid of activities for the community and professional dance artists. The DanceHouse will include 4 custom-built dance studios including a 240-seat studio theatre.

DanceEast is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and receives support from Arts Council England East, Suffolk County and District and Borough Councils and Ipswich Borough Council. In 2000, DanceEast launched Snape Dances, a partnership with Aldeburgh Productions to present British and international dance at Snape Maltings. Rural Retreats - international think tanks launched in 2003 with Ballet into the 21st century, saw DanceEast host the largest ever gathering of ballet directors from around the globe. In January 2004, DanceEast, on behalf of the Association of National Dance Agencies (ANDA) hosted British Dance Edition 2004, a biennial celebration of the best of British dance in Cambridge.

Additional support in 2003/04 has been received from the Arts Council of England, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, the Baring Foundation, the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, the Chase Charity, the Local Network Fund, Prettys Solicitors and Freed of London.

In 2002, DanceEast was short listed for East England Arts & Anglia Television\'s \'Six of the Best\' as Best Ambassador for the Arts. In 2003, DanceEast was nominated for the International Theatre Institute\'s \'Award for Excellence in International Dance\'.
